The Boxer6 motor produces 400ps and 56.1kgfm of torque.
The platform is based on Legacy and of course it is AWD.

If you cut off the front below the Subaru emblem (and look at the back), it looks like a 350Z.

Subaru B11S Concept Car Makes Its World's Premiere
at the 73rd International Geneva Motor Show

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced the unveiling of a revolutionary concept car, the Subaru B11S, at the 73rd International Geneva Motor Show to be held from March 6 to 16.
Combining sophisticated sporty design with ample interior space, the Subaru B11S represents a new type of four-door Coupe. While it was developed to demonstrate FHI's future design direction and strengthened design capabilities, the Subaru B11S also features superb driving performance, which is ensured by a Symmetrical AWD (all-wheel-drive) system in combination with a horizontally-opposed engine.

Since Kyoji Takenaka assumed the title of President and Chief Operating Officer in June 2001, FHI has been enhancing its design capabilities as part of companywide reforms aimed at improving the Subaru brand. One year later, as FHI began placing greater emphasis on the importance of design development, the long experienced Subaru car designer, Kiyoshi Sugimoto, was promoted to the position of Vice President, Senior General Manager of Subaru Product and Portfolio Planning Division and General Manager of Subaru Design Department, which marked the first time that a car designer was appointed to the executive officers. The Subaru B11S is the first concept car designed under the leadership of Mr. Sugimoto with guidance from Mr. Takenaka in initial concept development. The Barcelona-based independent design studio, Fuore Design International, under the leadership of Erwin Himmel, which has been retained by FHI as a consultancy, contributed to the creation of the B11S.

[Main features of the Subaru B11S]

1.Concept
The B11S has been developed to pursue the concept of Gran Utility Turismo, which embodies the perfect blend of sporty driving, comfort, functionality and elegance. The car incorporates all the crucial ingredients of this concept. It features attractive styling and packaging, which further reflect FHI's corporate philosophy, Innovative, Individual and Courageous ; Subaru's technological strengths, such as the horizontally-opposed engine and a Symmetrical AWD system; and driving performance equivalent to a high-performance sports car for the enthusiast.

2.Exterior design
The exterior design, composed of sophisticated flowing curves, expresses an elegant, sleek Coupe, while the car comfortably accommodating four adults. The front fascia, which fortifies its sporty look, conjures the turbine of a small jet plane and the freedom of flying wings-an association with FHI's corporate roots as an aircraft company, as well as a reminder of outstanding aerodynamic technology and performance.

The two pairs of side doors open like gates and latch in the middle without a conventional B-pillar, an arrangement that facilitates access to the back seats and makes interior room seem even more spacious. Developed specifically for the B11S, the frosted glass roof provides an open-air feeling, as in a convertible, and it creates a pleasant soft light inside the vehicle that enhances the quality look of its interior. The unique glass roof design was inspired by the design and construction of traditional Japanese umbrellas.

3.Interior design
In sharp contrast to the white pearl body color, for the interior of the B11S the color blue has been selected influenced by Subaru's characteristic color. Strong emphasis was placed on crafting an understated yet high-quality ambience in the cabin's design, which is reminiscent of Japanese interior decoration and its attention-to-detail approach. In addition, the folding backseats allow easy access to and from the trunk for luggage or sports equipment. The interior provides a comfortable space for passengers and offers practical solutions at the same time.

4.Driving performance
The B11S has been equipped with a new, horizontally-opposed, 6-cylinder engine. This engine, which will meet both the needs of driving pleasure and the demands of environmental considerations, is currently under development. Thanks to twin-turbocharger, the engine will ensure a smooth ride in low- and middle-speed ranges while it achieves a maximum output of 294 kW (400 ps) and a maximum torque of 550 Nm (56.1kgfm).

The Symmetrical AWD system integrated with a 5-speed automatic transmission comes with VTD (variable torque distribution), Subaru's unique, electronically controlled torque distribution system. While the basic torque distribution ratio of front to rear wheels is set at 35% and 65%, respectively, the VTD optimally controls the torque distribution between front and rear wheels according to driving conditions and realizes a high level of balance between the yawing tendency of a vehicle and high-speed stability.

Subaru's have never been the most elegant of Cars but I'd have to say this is no improvement.

Luckly most concept cars never see the light of day

The big question is can I shoehorn that H-6 into my little wagon.

The front end has some Alfa Romeo influence. Wonder is Subaru got some outside help on this design?

Yeah, Autoweek said the same thing. I think the rumor is that they poached one of Alfa's guy's recently and the influence is just starting to show.

anyone else see that?

Anyway the numbers are impressive. and to those of you who think the car is ugly, all I can say is look at the STI certainly not a beautiful car.

The front looks absolutely nasty. The tail end and suicide doors look nice, though. It reminds me of Mazda's RX-8.

yuck... i hope i never see everyone driving one of those around. if it didn't have the subaru logo on the alfa grille, i would never guess it was a subaru. and while one person said that the sti is not the greatest looker in the subaru fleet, it definately has this thing beat.

bcarver

they hired a designer that designed for alfa. when I first saw the scetch with the blue color I thought it was an alfa design.
the rest of the car is ok but the front doesn't look unique.

though most concepts never see the light of day it does show a basis of what the lines of future models will be....

from concepts it seems cool things like weird folding doors, Monsterous wheels and cool lines about the skirt of the car are always the most impressie on the concepts and the only things that never make it to production....

you take away those from this thing and all you got left is blech...

not to mention the thing looks like an absolute BOAT... what happened to sport compact?

So is it correct to say that coverting the numbers given for torque and power it comes out to 395hp and 405 lb/ft?

Mr.Blue
03-09-2003, 05:08 PM
Now if they made that a twin turbo H-6 I could look past the ugliness on the outside for the beauty on the inside.

03-09-2003, 06:31 PM
seems like 294KW=400ps=394hp and 550Nm=405.9lb-ft
so you are right about the unit conversion 02Gator

woa there subaru.....WTF is that? i dont think so buddy heh. that is the uglyest design the sketch guys have yet to think up. first they make the WRX a 4door ONLY car , now this? seriously, its a BOAT i wonder what that thing weighs?not to mension it looks like a hovertank. the baja is just about as wierd a car as i would find exceptable. good thing this wont go any further then the showroom.

But really, back to the drawing board guys. u can do better then that!

ZIZZIZ
03-11-2003, 09:38 PM
WHYYYY???

What is up with this car? Honestly, for the power to redeem the looks it neds at least 450 HP. And maybe not even then... The back is like a 350z ad the front a bad cross between a porshce and an alfa romeo... Have the designers lost their minds?!?!? I know i don't have a normal taste in design as i actually like the new STi, though it will never be as evil as the old 2.5 RS. but come onn what is that thing. It looks like the monster that came from design trash cans. All i can say is it is no car stylists wet dream.....

So this is what happens when the president attends design committee meetings. Send him back to the boardroom.

The rear looks like the stepchild of a Cirrus and a BMW 7-series. But the front...brings up some dim yet disturbing association from the mists of automotive time...can't remem...no, wait, that's it:

They've resurrected the Edsel. Sales will be similar.

Just a little bit off topic, but check out what Saab is doing with the WRX platform. They hint strongly, but don't say it that this car is based on the WRX. all wheel drive platform built by Fuji Heavy Industries, 2.5 N/A motor or 2.0 Turbo motor...

i was raised on subarus- they were always ugly
even when the impreza came out a lot of the domestic market was like like - ew.
the law of change means that we as people need it. i trust the designers are onto something here...because every car that subaru has come out with has always received mixed reviews or bad ones in terms of asthetics. luckily they have a former BMW designer on board. if you really think of the sti- its an ugly car with a "bossiness" about it. its so aggresive that it forces you to say... "yeah... i guess it looks cool. . . even though my scoop is the size of a mini garage" :D

I really, really want one of those seven-passenger SUVs; I think Subaru must bring this to market (even in this design style) to present a full US product line. If they can build this car for $35k and 24/29 MPG, it will sell big numbers. I think there is a large crowd out there who loves the Outback and Forester (as I do) but finds them too small for a family (two car seats BARELY fit side-by-side in the Forester, and you have trouble closing the doors in the Legacy/Outback wagon).

Personally I really like that design, but it is clearly a CGI rendering and not an actual photograph.
