True Unicorn GC

just wanted to share and see if you guys ever saw something like this. I've seen this guy driving around NYC a while ago, and he's the only one with this car, period. I can't find any info on this thing:

The guy driving this looked about in his late 30's, and didn't look like a car enthusiast at all. inside of the car looked like his traveling closet/garbage can. The only sticker on the car was a Marines window sticker.

the badging on the back was a 2.2 Outback Sport(even though the OBS is generally in the wagon trim.) the rims are the OB rims. paintjob is definitely OB trim/colors. headlights say it came out 98+.

one of the three unicorns i've seen - OBS sedan, trooper coupe, and rhd Saturn

anyone know any info on this bad boy?

(sorry for the bad quality of the pics - it was with my phone

Yep odd, thought the outback sedan only came as a legacy.

Yeah, I've only seen the Outback in a sedan in the legacy. I've actually seen a lot of those here but never a GC. Interesting, too bad the guy had no idea what he has.

I remember clearly that the Outback also came on Imprezas. First it was the wagon, then the sedan. Around the same time, Paul Hogan was also advertising the Legacy Outback Sedan. IIRC, there were commercials of this Impreza Outback sedan flying through the jungle.

yeah, the Outback was the Legacy sedan and wagon; the Outback Sport was the impreza wagon with the 98 RS front bumper and hood.

wow, just remembered - around that time(my98-99), when the RS came with the choice of either the gold or silver 5-star rims, nobody wanted them. the mid-01, the early rexers wanted them, and they were sought after like crazy. hi, i'm old.

i was posting this because nobody in the east coast has ever seen this either. i just figured that maybe with the Marines sticker, he may have brought it back with him from hawaii or cali.

i thought, MAYBE it was a custom job - but with the way he kept his car and the amount of work it would take to make a custom OB impreza sedan(in-depth paintjob, rims, hood, and badging), it just didn't add up for me.

Those aren't OB rims, those are 2.5GT rims. They're pretty easy to come by. There was definitely never an Outback Sport sedan, only the wagon. Perhaps it was a dealer special? I've seen dealers do weirder things than that. It could also be a test market car, although if that was the car one would think there would be more of them floating around. The year before the Legacy-based Outback Sport Utility Sedan (SUS) became available nation-wide, SoNE (Subaru of New England) had something like 300 or 500 of them. (Much like SoH, SoNE is somewhat independent from SoA. The SUS was something SoNE-specific for that first year, then the next year SoA picked it up nation-wide).

On a somewhat unrelated note, the first 2.5RS I ever saw was the original "unicorn" - the dark green '98 2.5RS with gold RS wheels. The dealer in New London, CT, had that thing sitting out in front for a loooong time, it just wouldn't sell. Eventually, the gold wheels went away and it suddenly had 2.5GT wheels on it (which looked fantastic on the dark green car - my '99 2.5GT was dark green and it really looked sharp). It disappeared shortly thereafter, sold I presume.

definitely a rare color the color i've seen even less though would be the brighton red RS that came out around the same time. when i was shopping for my car, i thought the SRP was a beat color...maybe i'm getting old, but if i had to do it again, maybe i would have gotten an SRP GC instead

heya chris! it's okay - roadtrips are fun, food is cheaper, In-N-Out and Krispey Kremes,...and that's it. not really feeling the people yet. and the scoob community out here isn't like hawaii - no waves and quite a few riced out rex's. biggest gripe would have to be the bad drivers who are constantly on their cell phones and don't look or signal when changing lanes.

we miss hawaii big time! but for our next move, it might either be LA or Florida, then NYC for a couple moonths, then hopefully back to hawaii

and how ya doing?? still lookin all sexy? tell Sue i'm jealous, and that it's not considered cheating if it's with another guy[/gay]:P
