Ok, I know it's really tough to find here in the good ol' U.S.A., but does anyone know of any that are available now? Or would I have to get one from Asia? I've weighed this before, and I know Japanese FM frequencies are funky, so... preferably a deck from HK maybe. I'm a bigger MD user than CD (curse my JDM habits haha!), but I'd like to preferably have both. Just a reminder that the GDA system is double DIN too. Any thoughts?

haha
I was about to post the same thing after I saw that post with link to e-bay with JDM WRX STI deck (CD/MD)
so I wonder too what mp3/MD would be a direct fit

Thanks for the link, Hyper! Yeah that STi parts thread got me thinkin' about MD CD decks again :D
Dick Fitzwell, that's a pimped out deck right there... I'm almost afraid that someone will jack my car when I'm not around haha. Dunno if I need tape tho, hrmmm...
Also, what about availability issues? Keep up the good work guys! Thanks!
Hey Ed, thanks for the link - I saw it from the other thread about the S202 that got totalled hehe (whatta waste :o !) It's close, but no cigar - I wanna find one with proper FM frequency (Japan uses funky FM waves lol)
Hey when you're in HK, try to get a look at a car audio store and lemme know if you see a system like that ok? Mebbe get a price or sumfin (but don't bring it back cuz I'm not ready for it yet lol!!) Thanks man!

Why not a Nakamichi unit? You can get their MD unit and couple it with their MB100 in dash changer I think.

Dammit, why must Nakamichi toy with us by putting that model and its info on their site then stating that it's not available stateside. :monkey: those Nakamichi sickos!! :D
Otherwise, that would've been perfect. Maybe it's available in Hong Kong... ;)
Any other options?

I have a Sony 1 din MD player, it has cd changer input to it also. I never used it, had it in the box for about 3 years now, if any one want I'll sell it. Another good place to look for stuff like this would be ebay, just cuz they have a lot of stuff there.

Thanks Ed! Hey, if I remember right, FM frequencies in HK are the same as ours - it's just that radio stations "own" more than one frequency on the dial.

I've lived in HK for more than 2 years total on and off, so unless they've changed since 5/01, we work on the same frequencies. Japan's the funky one that dips into the low 80's MHz and what not.

As luck would have it, I will indeed be going to HK this winter :D So now I can go on a search for it myself. Wish me luck everyone

Kenwood makes a 3+1 disc changer that can be added to any '99+ Kenwood deck.
here is the model #
KMD-D400
w/ a deck this would give you a double din set-up...

It seems that HUs from Europe might be a better idea - at least the FM band is aligned, stepping 50KHz instead of 200KHz of North America, but the AM band is screw-balled (unless they have switch of something) - because they step by 9KHz instead of 10KHz. And if it weren't for the stupid Japan FM band (76MHz-100MHz), the eclipse units look very enticing. Check out their site (http://www.fujitsu-ten.co.jp/) - get the top end CD head unit (supports MP3, CD-R/RW) and the in-dash 3 MDLP changer. That would have been it... otherwise, check the Kenwood/Pioneer decks in Europe. I'm also looking for some options to replace my Sony E900 (MDLP portable player) with car kit + stock head unit, but don't really know what kind of system I ultimately end up with. If I ever think about have a screen, it will be Pioneer, otherwise, I really liked the Eclipse units, with Kenwood and Sony rounding it out. Sony is the only manufacturer with MDLP head units (no CD or in dash changer MDLP or CD) in North America.

Excluding radio issues, if I don't need navigation or video or any of those fancy stuff:
Eclipse E3302CDT (1DIN CD-R/RW, no MP3 though) + E3308MDC (1DIN 3MDLP changer). Now if there is another head unit that can drive the 3MD changer and supports MP3 with North America radio band, that would be sweet... (looks like Eclipse isn't that fond of MP3 since none of their decks supports MP3)
Seems that Kenwood heads supports the most format - MP3 + WMA + CD-R/RW. Anyone have detail wiring knowledge of Eclipse units, specifically, changers like this?

Another option I found:
Kenwood KDC-X959 (CD-R/RW/MP3/WMA, North American Unit) + KMD-D401 (In-dash 3+1 MDLP changer, European Unit).

No MDLP though, and not a lot of stores have it in stock, plus it's discountinued I think. Hence the need for KMD-D401

Kenwood actually had a 1DIN MDLP+CD unit in Japan. Lack of MP3 is not a problem for me if I get that one, but the tuner frequency kills the deal - plus the high price (like $1300CDN after exchange rate conversion). I like the convenience to change the disc inside (MD or CD). Maybe the second best option is to have a normal CD/MP3 changer in the trunk, driven by an MD head unit - just that I don't like to run long wires that's all.

Hmm if I had a huge MD collection I'd just get an FM Modulator installed so I could plug a portable MD player into a sweet single din MP3/CDRW deck. In MP3 format, all my good music fits onto 4 CDs with 140-180 songs per CD. The 2002 Subaru single din pocket is nicely finished and in my opinion is alot more functional than paying 60% more for a double din deck that likely only adds tape playback to the deal.
I have a Pioneer DEH-7400MP head unit and a plain black 98' Subaru single din pocket that I got for free from my Subaru dealer. I'm going to order a 2002 style pocket next time I go in for service. Oh the 02 pocket has a sleek concealed push-spring lid system and the 98 has the "button on the bottom" style lid opening that's not nearly as slick.
Here's a pic of my current setup (sorry bout the big dark pic):
