Great news.
Not only did they take Unocal after China pulled the bid, but they ironically own all of Unocal's stakes in Asia.
I'm sure the high octane fuel will stay. Write Chevron if you're concerned.
Hell, they may keep the name and everything the same. Unocal's name has withstood the test of time and is most popular with people like us. So you goto the Unocal across the street instead of the Chevron? They still profit.

maybe we'll get a bonus and get high octane at chevrons too!
but i'm sure there will be some stations closed...
seems to be a chevron within eye shot from every 76 i see.

But they'd also inadvertently increase the profits of their competitors if they eliminate the 76 stations. You still have a given number of cars that need gas vs so many gas stations. If you eliminate the 76 station people routinely goto once a week then you risk losing business to Shell across the street. I guess it depends on the given area and what gas stations happen to be present.
If they turn every Unocal worth keeping into a Chevron station then it costs money to give every station a facelift. May be worth it. If it isn't worth it then they'll gladly keep Unocal’s trusted name while making it run like a Chevron. In any case I’m sure they'll keep everything Unocal once had to offer. Their fuel contracts with the military down to race gas.
I'm sure shutting down such facilities that produce such fuel costs a ton anyways. Btw, where can you get race gas in Sacramento?

I'm not sure they'll sell as much fuel as they do now if they shut down all 76 stations, but just by cutting costs and competition, they will make more money.
As I understand it, Chevron has to close down a certain number of stations for the government to be satisfied with the buyout.

What we should really be worried about is gas prices... Chevron / Texaco has already had a banner year, and this merger gives them even more freedom to test our resolve with regards to our lifestyles. I think they know most of us would gladly pay $3.00 or more per gallon, and you know what? We better get used to that idea.

i use costco or safeway gas...both which are chevron pre-techron additives or shell pre-additive, so they say...couple friends i've had over the years who work for costco say it's identical if you ask the tanker drivers.
as long as Exxon or BP don't buy Chevron we'll be okay...although chevron is prolly close to being the size of either exxon or BP now w/ the mergers if not bigger.
