I am working on the swap. I got the motor and pretty much all the parts to prepare for the swap. The easy part is the swap, the hard part is the wiring.
Why shop charges a lot is because of the wiring. It is very complicated.
I got the 99 JDM EJ20 motor without ECU and wiring..
I bought the JDM ECU and I am gotta use USDM WRX wiring harness since the connectors are the same. Now... I am twisting my head to figure out how to combine the new wiring and current wiring because I want to use current wiring for all the housekeeping wires...
If you find the same year motor as your car, it's a lot easier. A lot of plugs matches actually.
As for the price on motor, it depends..
JDM WRX motor ranges from 92 to current ones.
Keep in mind, early motors are more than 10 years old so they are somewhat tired. Same goes to 10 years old turbo. Some might not be in good shape anymore.
Old ones are pretty cheap though.

You can pick up a USA WRX motor for far cheaper than a JDM motor in good shape that isn't going to need to be rebuilt because it has high miles. We all know the USA WRX came out in 02. They will not have a lot of miles as a 6-8 yr old JDM motor. the WRX motor will also have replacement parts more readily available.

us wrx, i dont know where to look for one so i cant really compare prices, i go by what shops around me say. but i am still deciding on the car i want, i am soo torn between these 3 i dont know. time will tell which car will be better fo rme

Be carefule what people tell you about what you can get and for what price.
It's best to call/speak with people who either sell the stuff or did it/do it themselves.
After that you can get a better idea of which direction you should take.
Also, remember to get as much in writing as possible. I have heard of many people getting screwed on parts and installations for swaps.

To find a US WRX motor try this site www.car-part.com. I did a search and found many WRX motors.

I paid $1000 for mine EJ20 with intercooler and oil cooler, no tranny and ecu.... but don't know what year is it... and I know a place will sell the motors with the link or the haltech system installed on the motor as a package... and I paid $1000 for my haltech E6K , but that was last year.

Hi guys,
I just finished my conversion project, I was scared at first but as long as you get the wiring diagrams, it all works! I used a '99 RS harness and cut the JDM STI ECU into it. This was a really fun project... and I got me a '95 '98 '99 '2000' L/RS/STI car... im going to have to write a modern version of that Johnny Cash song...
