actualy mackenzie, starting with model year 98, the L impreza got a slight increase in compression from i think 9 or 9.5 to 1 up to 10 to 1 boosting horsepower to about 145, which is good but not AS good for when you want to turbocharge it...definately not a large obstacle but you wont be able to add alot of boost with compression that high
im also looking for parts to turbo my 98 L and someone reccomended looking for a junkyard turbo off a saab 9000 or somthing turbo with a similar sized engine

and despite all imprezas being very very similar alot of parts dont swap back and forth as easily as i'd like.....heh, but if you can go ahead and grab a turbo from an old turbo legacy or WRX cause they work well for subie sized engines, as well as injectors and fuel pumps and stuff, but you may have to do the plumbing custom to your car since it wont all fit exactly like the car you got the parts from

how much money do you have?? there are plenty of kits out specificaly for our year , that'd be a good bet if you can fork over a couple few grand...

heh im just messin with you, no flameage here, i'd just trust my book since its gotten me through a bunch of repairs without any problems, and it says 98 is when the increase in compression happened so uh.....yeah im done

anyway! makenzie how goes the quest for turbo fun?? find any parts? im looking as well, no decent cheap turbos on e-bay so far...either too small or too old and broken

well impooter. it appears we were both wrong about the compression (according to msn)

99 - 9.7:1
98 - 9.7:1
97 - 9.7:1
96 - 9.5:1
95 - 9.5:1

so 97 was the first year to get upgraded compression. 99 is the first year to have 142 hp over the 97-98 which had 137. 95-96 were the first years to even use the 2.2L engine. they had 135hp.

wow glad we cleared that up.

ok turbo question. look at these threads

report back your findings.

basically you are going to want to lower compression. you can put on 1.8L heads to do this. or get the legacy 2.2t block. also legacy 2.2t pistons will lower compression. basically try and find a legacy 2.2t and scavange lots of parts. or do a swap...

huh...damn book...............i was closer
now i know, and knowing is half the battle...

i looked myself, found a neat site that gives you a bit of an idea of things you can do with the EJ series as far as hybrid engines.....not like gas/electric but different heads on what block will give you what compression and such.....
