Falken Tire GT LIVE Series Debut at Miller Motorsports Park a Big Hit with Fans and Participants
Posted on March 19, 2008 - 6:49 PM by Ali Allage Source: GT LIVE

Santa Monica, CA (May 8, 2007) -- Motorsports enthusiasts in Utah and surrounding states enjoyed a new experience this past weekend as GT LIVE West presented by BFGoodrich Tires made its debut at Miller Motorsports Park. It was quite a getting-to-know-you affair on a couple of fronts, as the local fans got their first taste of GT LIVE's interactive motorsports festival concept and the competitors got their first exposure to the state-of-the-art racing plant located in Tooele, UT.

The drivers and riders were unanimous in their praise for the lavish facilities, and the fans were excited to see some of the fastest tuner cars in the business and some top-notch drivers in the Redline Time Attack, an amazing show from the XDL U.S. Stunt Bike Championship, and a smoke-filled demonstration of the art of drifting by the Falken Drift Team.

What made the most lasting impression on the fans, though, was the chance to ride shotgun with the likes of Tarzan Yamada and his Grand Am Subaru Legacy 2.5GT wagon, Tanner Foust in the Crawford Performance Subaru STi, Paul Gerrard in the AMS Performance EVO, Ken Gushi in the CUSCO Subaru STi, the KSport Honda Integra and a few others stand outs in the GT Sim Race. In a sight that left GT LIVE organizers and Miller staff speechless, fans sprinted from the gates to the Falken garages at 7:00 AM to get in line for rides in one of the Falken Drift cars.

Another popular feature of the weekend was Sunday's Celebrity Kart Race, held on the Miller Kart Track. This event brought together Vaughn Gittin, Ross Petty, Tarzan Yamada, Tanner Foust, Ken Gushi, Hiro Sumida, Darius Khashabi and Nick Brocha from drifting, time attack and XDL in a battle for bragging rights. After a particularly fraught pair of five-lap sprint races, XDL U.S. Stunt Bike Championship competitor Darius Khashabi bested all the four-wheel racers to take the trophy, while his compatriot, Nick Brocha, book-ended the field with the "Cone of Shame" for worst performance.

In the Redline Time Attack competition, Tanner Foust claimed a new track record on DOT tires for the 2.20-mile East Course with a 1:37.541 in the Crawford Performance Subaru STi to take the overall and All-Wheel-Drive class wins. Second in the AWD class was Richard Garcia in the DynoComp Subaru STi with a 1:40.316 lap, while pre-event favorite Paul Gerrard in the AMS Performance Mitsubishi EVO VIII was felled by mechanical failure on his run. Falken Drift Team star Vaughn Gittin moonlighted in an MMP-built Mustang Challenge car, and took home the Rear-Wheel-Drive class win. The Front-Wheel-Drive class win went to the K Sports Honda Integra Type R of Brady Dohrman.

The XDL U.S. Stunt Bike Championship competition resulted in two more trophies (Longest Stoppie and Longest Coaster) for Khashabi to add to his Celebrity Kart Race hardware, plus a tie for first in the Individual Freestyle which he lost on a tie-breaker to Ernie Vigil. Brocha made up for his "Cone of Shame" in the kart race by taking the top prize for "Sickest Trick."

As the smoke cleared from the final Falken Drift Demo at the end of the weekend, fans and competitors headed for home and talk was already starting about a bigger and better show for 2008. GT LIVE will return to Miller Motorsports Park on May 3 & 4, 2008.

Next stop for the Falken Tire GT LIVE Series is Virginia International Raceway on October 6 & 7.
